Numbers In Spanish: How To Count From 0 To 1,000 And Beyond

Numbers are some of the most useful Spanish words you can know. You need them when paying for lunch, asking what time something starts, giving someone your phone number, talking about your age, or understanding prices at a market.

The good news is that Spanish numbers follow clear patterns. Once you know the basic numbers and understand how they combine, counting becomes much easier than memorizing every number separately.

Spanish Numbers From 0 To 20

The first numbers are worth memorizing because they form the foundation for everything that comes later. Pronunciation can vary slightly by region, but these approximations are useful for English speakers getting started.

Numbers from 11 to 15 have individual forms, so they are best remembered as vocabulary. From 16 onward, you can begin to see the patterns that make larger Spanish numbers easier.

Students taking Spanish classes in Playa del Carmen use these numbers in everyday situations such as ordering food, discussing schedules, shopping, and talking with local people.

Spanish Numbers From 21 To 29

Numbers between 21 and 29 are written as one word. Instead of saying veinte y dos, for example, Spanish combines the words into veintidós.

NumberSpanish
21veintiuno
22veintidós
23veintitrés
24veinticuatro
25veinticinco
26veintiséis
27veintisiete
28veintiocho
29veintinueve

Notice the accent marks in veintidós, veintitrés, and veintiséis. The number dieciséis also carries an accent.

These small spelling details matter, especially when you begin writing dates, prices, quantities, and other numbers in Spanish.

Spanish Numbers From 30 To 100

From 30 onward, Spanish numbers become very predictable. First, memorize the main tens.

  • 30: treinta
  • 40: cuarenta
  • 50: cincuenta
  • 60: sesenta
  • 70: setenta
  • 80: ochenta
  • 90: noventa
  • 100: cien

To create numbers between these tens, use the pattern tens + y + number.

For example:

31: treinta y uno
42: cuarenta y dos
55: cincuenta y cinco
68: sesenta y ocho
73: setenta y tres
99: noventa y nueve

The word y, meaning “and,” connects the tens and the final number. You say cuarenta y cinco for 45, not cuarenta cinco.

Understanding patterns like this is much more useful than trying to memorize a list of 100 separate words. The same communication focused approach is especially helpful when exploring Mexican Spanish vocabulary and pronunciation, where context helps new words feel more natural.

Cien Vs Ciento: How To Say 100 In Spanish

Exactly 100 is cien.

For example:

cien pesos
100 pesos

cien personas
100 people

Once another number follows 100, cien normally changes to ciento.

101: ciento uno
115: ciento quince
140: ciento cuarenta
199: ciento noventa y nueve

This distinction is easy to remember once you start hearing numbers in real conversations.

Spanish Numbers From 100 To 1,000

The hundreds follow another useful pattern, although a few forms need to be memorized.

NumberSpanish
100cien
200doscientos
300trescientos
400cuatrocientos
500quinientos
600seiscientos
700setecientos
800ochocientos
900novecientos
1,000mil

Pay particular attention to quinientos, setecientos, and novecientos. These do not follow the simplest pattern and are common places for beginners to make mistakes.

Numbers between the hundreds follow the same rules you already know. For example, 250 is doscientos cincuenta, while 278 is doscientos setenta y ocho.

Do Spanish Numbers Change With Gender?

Some Spanish numbers change depending on the noun they describe. This happens because Spanish nouns can be masculine or feminine.

Uno becomes un before a masculine noun:

un peso
one peso

With a feminine noun, it becomes una:

una hora
one hour

The same idea affects 21. You may hear veintiún días for 21 days but veintiuna personas for 21 people.

Hundreds can also agree with gender. For example, you can say doscientos pesos but doscientas personas.

Thousands, Millions And Larger Numbers In Spanish

Once you reach 1,000, the system remains manageable.

1,000: mil
2,000: dos mil
10,000: diez mil
50,000: cincuenta mil
100,000: cien mil
1,000,000: un millón
2,000,000: dos millones

Spanish does not normally say un mil for 1,000. The correct form is simply mil.

Also remember that millón becomes millones in the plural. These larger numbers become useful when discussing populations, property prices, budgets, statistics, or business figures.

How To Use Spanish Numbers In Everyday Life

Memorizing numbers is useful, but they become much easier to remember when you connect them to situations you actually experience.

This is especially true when spending time in Mexico, where numbers quickly become part of daily communication.

Prices And Mexican Pesos

Imagine asking the price of something at a market:

¿Cuánto cuesta?
How much does it cost?

Cuesta doscientos cincuenta pesos.
It costs 250 pesos.

Practising prices is one of the easiest ways to become comfortable recognizing numbers when someone says them quickly.

Ages

Spanish uses the verb tener, meaning “to have,” when talking about age.

Tengo treinta años.
I am 30 years old.

You would not normally translate the English structure word for word.

Phone Numbers

Phone numbers may be said digit by digit or in groups depending on the speaker.

Practise recognizing each number individually first. Once that becomes comfortable, try saying your own phone number naturally in Spanish.

Dates And Years

Numbers are also essential for birthdays, appointments, historical dates, and travel plans.

For example:

2026: dos mil veintiséis

Building confidence with dates before arriving in Mexico can make a Spanish immersion experience easier when organizing classes, transportation, reservations, and everyday plans.

Time

Numbers appear constantly when making plans.

Son las cuatro.
It is four o’clock.

Son las cuatro y treinta.
It is four thirty.

Hearing times correctly can make a big difference when arranging lessons, tours, restaurant reservations, or meetings.

Common Mistakes With Numbers In Spanish

Spanish numbers are logical, but a few mistakes appear frequently among new learners.

Incorrect: veinte y dos
Correct: veintidós

Incorrect: treinta uno
Correct: treinta y uno

Incorrect: ciento personas
Correct: cien personas

Incorrect: un mil
Correct: mil

Incorrect: dos millón
Correct: dos millones

Do not worry if these forms feel unfamiliar at first. Repetition through conversation usually makes the correct patterns feel natural much faster than memorizing rules alone.

How To Remember Spanish Numbers

Start with 0 to 15, then memorize the tens such as veinte, treinta, cuarenta, and cincuenta. Once those pieces are comfortable, practise combining them instead of studying every possible number independently.

Use numbers that already matter in your life. Say your age, birthday, phone number, favorite sports scores, daily schedule, and common prices aloud in Spanish.

Real situations also make excellent practice. Count items at the supermarket, notice prices in pesos, say the time in Spanish, or calculate how much you spent during the day.

The goal is not simply to recognize a number on a vocabulary list. It is to understand it when someone says it naturally and feel confident using it yourself.
